The 7 Mindsets solution is based on positive psychology. Today, the vast majority of psychology is focused on intervention or managing problems that have already arisen. The objective of the 7 Mindsets curriculum is to develop non-cognitive functioning to prevent the need for intervention in the future. It can be likened to getting a physical and the advantages of preventative maintenance to prevent a future personal health crisis.
The statistics on mental disease, substance abuse, violence, and general disengagement with life are staggering. Moreover, our research indicates that even the students graduating with high academic marks may be unemployable in many cases. Their inability to effectively communicate, recognize social cues, maintain strong relationships, deal with adversity, and persist through challenges are very problematic and often untenable for employers.
As our world becomes more disconnected, it is essential that schools become intentional and dedicate time and processes toward developing the non-cognitive capacities of their students. The goal is to create an environment where every student can thrive and ultimately build for themselves an authentic life that they can be proud of. This will continue to require strong academics augmented by a strong social and emotional foundation.
