What is Insights Early Elementary (Insights EE)?

Insights Early Elementary (SELweb EE) is a web-based direct assessment of social competencies that are widely taught in evidence-based curricula for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Insights EE measures the competencies of emotion recognition, social perspective-taking, social problem-solving, and self-control.

Insights Early Elementary (Insights EE) consists of the following six modules: 

1. Emotion Recognition

Students look at children’s faces presented on the screen. Students are asked to decide if each face is happy, sad, angry, scared, or just ok by pressing the respective response buttons and then pressing the “Continue” button to advance to the next question.

2. Self-Control

Students are allotted 10 rockets to send into space. They learn that whereas the fast rocket earns 1 point, the slower rocket owns 2 points, and the slowest rocket earns 3 points. Students then decide which of the rockets to send into space. This module assesses students' ability to tolerate tedium in service of the goal of gaining more points. 

3. Social Perspective-Taking

Students listen to brief illustrated and narrated stories and answer questions about a story character’s actions.

4. Social Problem-Solving

Students listen to brief illustrated and narrated stories and answer questions about a story character’s intentions and actions.

5. Self-Control

Students decide if the pairs of shapes they see are the same or different. During this module, the buttons are programmed to sometimes appear stuck. Done on purpose, this stuck button assess student's competency of self-control. Prior to taking Insights EE, students should not be told of this stuck button, and if students ask about the stuck button, students should be told to just do their best.
